ce Meetingattractivenakedsexslaves . Money eaning we really didn’t get a long, and I never imagined that we’d grow to be friends… let alone close friends. Yet of all of the photographers I know, I can say that she is one of my very favorites. Â I have huge amounts of respect for Olivia. Â She’s an insanely talented photographer, businesswoman, and she’s got so much character. Â Nowadays Olivia is probably the person I met in Chicago who I am in contact with the most, thanks to the power of the internet. Â She’s always there to talk about wedding stuff, photography, life, and most importantly R. Kelly.
So O, if you do stumble upon this try to not be mad that I posted a photo of you online that might not be your favorite. Â One day I will take a good one. Â And thanks for being a good friend, it’s good to publicly acknowledge these things on the internet. Â Trust me.

I really think I need to find a way to spend about a week in Los Angeles just photographing the city. This last trip was definitely too short, and didn’t have enough opportunity for photos. We had gone through Northridge, and I was fascinating by how many signs inundated the major roads. Businesses did everything they could in signs and window graphics to get you to look at them. It was visually overwhelming, and unfortunately our schedule was too tight to really stop and walk around. I don’t really have any past photos of LA that illustrate the phenomenon of the Northridge signs, but I do have this shot of a storefront downtown called, “Family Pants” that I thought I’d post as substitution. I mean it’s called “Family Pants,” how strange is that?

We’re in Los Angeles for meetings and I decided to post a post a shot from an engagement shoot we did in Hollywood. The view is from the Hollyhock mansion.

After a little networking meeting with a couple of photographers today we strolled into a local camera store that was next door to our meeting spot. It was totally dead inside, and I ended up getting to chat with a couple of the guys that worked there. I tried out Nikon’s relatively new 35mm f/1.4G just for fun, and of course it was glorious. I instantly got a case of déjÃ¥ vu and remembered being back in Bothell Washington where we used to live- at the local camera store falling in love with the 35mm f/2D lens. Back then I was shooting on the D70, a crop sensor camera. That same 35mm f/2 eventually got replaced with Sigma’s 30mm f/1.4, which for cropped sensors was a more useful lens. The D70 had a 1.5x crop factor, which turned the 35mm lens into a 52.5mm, and the 30mm into a 45mm effective focal range. With little bit extra in wide angle, and the big bump in speed the Sigma was a better choice. Unfortunately the Sigma was optimized for cropped sensor cameras, and vignetted pretty bad when I upgraded to the FX sensor. So I actually ended up re-purchasing the 35mm f/2D. For it’s price and size, it’s still an excellent lens. But I always want the best of best… so that new 35mm is tempting. When I try out lenses in camera stores Melissa always becomes my default subject. Since I don’t post photos same day, I will show you the first 35mm shot from 2005. Photoshop 7 didn’t record my exif data, but I’m pretty positive I shot this at f/2 to check out the sharpness. Test lenses in camera stores always seem sharper to me for some reason.

I had been thinking a little about how much I love photographing interesting urban settings today. I’m a bit regretful that I didn’t explore more of the Pilsen area of Chicago when I lived there. This photo was taken from an artist loft at one of those first Friday type of open houses. I don’t remember much about the show being exciting to me, but I was excited about the D3′s dynamic range when I got to edit this sunset photo.

Today was kind of lame. Truth be told this whole month has been a bit rough. I’d rather not dwell on negativity, so I was trying to think of a photo that embodied a happy moment. My friend Josh has been wanting to make some prints of some photos I took of the bridges in downtown LA a few years ago. At the end of 2007 I was in San Diego for the holidays. We had some down time, so we decided to take a trip out to the Salton Sea, and then stay a night in Palm Springs. After that we headed into Los Angeles to meet Josh. I forget the details of how long he’d been living in LA, but he had really developed an affinity for the bridges. After we finished our bridge tour we took a walk down Hollywood Boulevard where I ran into this guy who saw the camera and instead of trying to get out of the way happily wished me peace.

This shot was taken from the car a few days before yesterday’s post. It’s been a favorite of mine for awhile, and since my mind has been on that trip a little I thought I’d post another from that period. I’m always inwardly impressed with myself anytime I’m able to take a shot from a moving car that actually turns out.

Maybe I’ve been paying too much attention to my Twitter feed lately, but today it was a barrage of Portland people announcing the arrival of what probably amounted to an ounce of snow. I think Chicago really ruined me for snow excitement. Unless it’s up to my ankles it doesn’t really get me too worked up, and I definitely won’t be seeing any living in San Diego. I don’t recall ever seeing snow until I was 22. It was on my first move to Chicago, and I think I was somewhere in Arizona.
Along the highways of the United States, in those parts of the country most consider the middle of nowhere there are fantastic gas station trading posts. Â That’s where this photo was taken, somewhere on one of those highways in New Mexico on my second cross country move to Chicago. Â It was taken almost 5 years ago to this day. Â It seems like an absolute lifetime ago.
